Bangladesh and Thailand are looking to deepen their trade partnership, with both sides expressing interest in stronger logistics links and more efficient maritime connectivity. The direction became clear during a meeting in Dhaka, where the Thai Ambassador to Bangladesh, Thitiporn Chirasawadi, paid a courtesy call on Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin at the Secretariat.
During the discussion, the Commerce Adviser highlighted Bangladesh’s efforts to create a more investor-friendly environment. He pointed to what he described as “excellent opportunities” for foreign investors, noting the country’s rapid growth in pharmaceuticals, shrimp, furniture manufacturing, and tourism. He urged Thai businesses to tap into these expanding sectors, saying the potential returns would benefit both economies.
The Thai Ambassador echoed the optimism but placed particular emphasis on upgrading logistics ties—especially through maritime routes. She noted that smoother sea transport would allow trade to expand more rapidly and at lower cost. According to her, a Free Trade Agreement between Bangladesh and Thailand would significantly boost bilateral trade flows.
The envoy underscored the strategic potential of opening the first direct maritime trade route between Thailand’s Ranong Port and Bangladesh’s Chattogram Port. She argued that using the western Ranong seaport could shorten shipping time substantially and reduce trade expenses, making the route a competitive alternative for exporters on both sides.
Both countries agreed to continue advancing FTA discussions and to explore how maritime connectivity can accelerate overall trade growth.
